On October 31, I had the privilege of speaking about the art and technique of film scoring to the talented cinema students at the University of São Paulo (USP), one of Brazil’s most prestigious and historic institutions. The experience was truly inspiring, as I was able to connect with passionate students eager to learn about how music shapes the emotional and narrative elements of film.
This session took place in the class of Professor Eduardo Vicente, from the Departamento de Cinema, Rádio e Televisão, Escola de Comunicações e Artes, and it was an honor to collaborate with him and his students. USP has long been a beacon of academic excellence, and it was an honor to share insights on how composers craft scores that elevate visual storytelling. During the session, I had the unique opportunity to compose a score live with the students, walking them through the creative process from start to finish. It was exciting to discuss how music serves as the soul of a film.
In addition to the live composition, I answered many insightful questions from the students, diving deeper into the technical and artistic aspects of film scoring. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn made the experience even more enriching.
The students’ enthusiasm was infectious, and it was refreshing to see the next generation of filmmakers and composers so engaged and curious about the evolving world of film scoring. I’m grateful for the opportunity to inspire these young minds, and I look forward to seeing how they will contribute to the future of cinema, bringing powerful stories to life with music that resonates deeply with audiences.
Thank you, Professor Eduardo Vicente, and the University of São Paulo, for such a memorable experience!
